Support for Charlotte, NC Area celibacy Children
Support for Charlotte, NC Area Celiac Children
The Celiac Youth Connection (CYC) is a sub-group of the Charlotte Celiac
Connection (CCC).  This group was organized in June 2006 to provide
support for our celiac youth in the Charlotte, NC area.  Although
separate youth activities were organized and held for the first three
months, events have been discontinued due to low interest.  If interest
peaks in the future and we get a strong volunteer network established,
then we can get something going again.  In the interim, come join us at
our monthly luncheons.

The youth section of this web-site is to provide parents of the celiac
child (children) or the celiac child, them self, with additional resources,
ideas, links, etc. to help make life easier for everyone.
The gluten-free lifestyle is, although not simple,
simply a journey down a different path...
Newly Diagnosed?
Have you or your child been recently diagnosed with celiac disease and
you don't know where or how to begin?  Don't panic! Just remember
that no matter how overwhelming it may feel at first, it truly will get
easier.  Other moms and dads will be able to help, give you support and
teach you some tips.

Here are some initial steps to follow:

  1. Get Information:  Gather lots of information on celiac disease
and  read - read - read!  You can start by reading the following
pages in this web-site and also by clicking to some other sites for
    other resources (via links):

  1. Learn The Diet:  Study the gluten-free dietary requirements.
The celiac community may often present - no wheat - no rye - no
barley (myself included) but there is so much more to the diet!
Gluten-free means no hidden ingredients.  Basically, you need to
research and understand the composition of every item before
you give it to your child to eat.  Food items marked "gluten-free"
can be trusted.  Yes, mistakes can happen but the gluten-free
label gives you assurance the manufacturer has taken care to
make sure unsafe grains are not included in the food item.
Click on the following for more on the basics:

  1. Contact a Dietitian:  You may want to contact our dietitian to
help you get started. There is a small consulting fee but you will
find it worth it, just for peace of mind.  Pat is not only a
registered dietitian but she is the mother of a celiac daughter
herself, so she speaks from personal experience.
  1. Join a Local Support Group - if you live in the Charlotte, NC
then come join us at our monthly luncheons.  We meet at local area
restaurants that provide a gluten-free menu.  For information on
the next meeting <<< click here >>>

No Local Group? If you don't live in the Charlotte, NC area then
ask your doctor or local health food store manager if they know
of a local support group in the area.  If you still cannot find a
group, join a national support group and Listserv to keep you
informed and help you with your questions.
  • National Support Groups - these are national organizations
    to help celiacs everywhere!
  • Local Support Groups Everywhere - this is a listing of
known support groups.  Also, see links in the upper right
corner for branches of national support groups to find one
    in your area.
  • ICORS Listserv - a posting site where celiacs from around
the world share information and ask each other questions.
I have been blessed tremendously by this group.  There is
    no fee to join!

Finally, buy some cookbooks and have fun learning to cook and
    bake  gluten-free, see: <<< resources >>>
